New gutter installation: what drives the price
Gutters are priced mostly by the linear foot, so the length of your roof edges is the starting point. From there, these factors move the number:
- Footage. A simple single-story house needs far fewer feet of gutter than a large two-story with many corners and roof sections.
- Stories and access. HomeGuide notes two-story installs commonly add about $1 to $3 per linear foot.
- Material and gauge. Aluminum is the usual baseline; steel and copper cost more. Heavier aluminum costs a little more but resists dents.
- Size and style. 6-inch gutters and half-round profiles each add roughly $1 to $2 per linear foot in HomeGuide's figures.
- Downspouts. Each downspout, elbow and extension adds cost, and larger 3x4 downspouts cost more than 2x3.
- Corners and miters. Complex roofs with many inside and outside corners take more labor.
- Removal and fascia. Taking down old gutters and repairing rotted fascia add to the total.
- Guards. Adding guards at the same time can raise the total significantly, depending on the product.
Example (math illustration only): a ranch needing about 150 linear feet of gutter, multiplied by HomeGuide's published range of about $12 to $25 per linear foot, gives roughly $1,800 to $3,750 before downspouts, removal and fascia repairs. This is arithmetic on a published range, not a quote.
See gutter installation.
Gutter replacement
Replacing an existing system costs about the same per foot as new installation, plus removal of the old gutters (HomeGuide lists about $50 to $200) and any fascia repairs found once the old gutters come down. Replacement is also the best time to fix downspout locations and sizes that never worked well. See gutter replacement.
Seamless gutters
Angi lists seamless gutters at an average of about $1,150, with a typical range of $650 to $1,700 and about $3 to $25 per linear foot. HomeGuide says seamless gutters usually cost about $3 to $5 or more per linear foot than sectional gutters. The premium buys fewer joints, which means fewer leaks over time. See seamless gutters and seamless vs. sectional gutters.
Aluminum gutters
HomeGuide lists installed aluminum at about $10 to $20 per linear foot with a typical life of 20 to 30 years. Angi lists aluminum at about $7 to $12 per linear foot with an average project around $2,400, and notes seamed aluminum at about $7 to $10 per foot versus seamless at about $9 to $13. Residential aluminum is commonly 0.027 or 0.032 inch thick (Angi, how to choose gutter gauge). See aluminum gutters.
Steel gutters
HomeGuide lists installed steel at about $10 to $35 per linear foot with a life of roughly 20 to 50 years, and Angi lists galvanized steel material at about $5 to $20 per foot. Angi notes steel gutters are commonly 24 to 30 gauge, with 26 gauge most common, and that steel can rust through in 10 to 15 years once its coating fails. See steel gutters.
Copper and half-round gutters
HomeGuide lists copper at about $25 to $40 per linear foot installed, with a life of 50 to 100 years, and zinc at about $35 to $45. Half-round profiles add about $1 to $2 per foot in other materials. Angi lists copper downspouts at about $17 to $20 per linear foot. See copper and half-round gutters.
5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters
HomeGuide notes 6-inch gutters typically add about $1 to $2 per linear foot over 5-inch. On a house with 160 feet of gutter, that is roughly $160 to $320 more (math illustration only), often worth it on large or steep roofs where 5-inch gutters overflow. See 5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters.
Gutter cleaning
HomeGuide puts typical cleaning at about $100 to $250, or about $0.50 to $2.50 per linear foot, with ranges of about $70 to $200 for one-story homes, $100 to $275 for two-story and $130 to $400 for three-story homes. Unclogging downspouts is often listed separately at about $60 to $150. Angi lists an average of about $168 and about $0.95 to $2.25 per linear foot. HomeGuide recommends cleaning two to three times a year, and about every two years for gutters with guards. See gutter cleaning.
Gutter repair
HomeGuide puts typical gutter repairs at about $100 to $450, averaging around $275. Its examples include pitch adjustment at about $75 to $200, fixing sagging gutters at about $75 to $300 and sealing leaks at about $100 to $225. Many companies have a minimum charge for small jobs. See gutter repair.
Gutter guards and covers
HomeGuide lists professionally installed guards at about $3,000 to $9,000 for 200 linear feet (about $15 to $45 per foot) and DIY guards at about $200 to $1,000. Material prices by type range from about $0.50 to $1 per foot for plastic screens to about $3.50 to $10 for reverse-curve covers. Angi lists an average of about $1,521, a typical range of $653 to $2,459 and about $6 to $13 per foot. See gutter guards and covers and are gutter guards worth it?
Downspouts and extensions
HomeGuide lists downspouts at about $30 to $75 each, and its repair guide lists downspout replacement at about $30 to $75 each or about $2 to $4 per linear foot. Angi lists downspouts at about $5 to $8 per linear foot for vinyl or aluminum, $9 to $12 for steel and $17 to $20 for copper. Buried drain lines and pop-up emitters are priced separately. See downspouts and drainage and downspout drainage options.
Fascia and soffit
HomeGuide lists fascia replacement at about $5 to $12 per linear foot in its installation guide, and Angi lists fascia at about $7 to $22 per linear foot and soffit at about $6 to $30 per linear foot. Rotted rafter tails or sub-fascia add cost. Because gutters hang on the fascia, it should be solid before new gutters go up. See fascia and soffit.
Hail-damaged gutters
Hail repairs range from a few dented downspouts to a full gutter replacement, so there is no single number. When insurance is involved, the adjuster's estimate, your deductible and your policy terms drive what you pay. See hail-damaged gutters.
Insurance basics in Kansas
- What is usually covered. Homeowners policies commonly cover sudden damage from hail and wind, minus your deductible. Wear, clogging and age are not covered.
- Deductibles. Some policies have separate or percentage-based wind and hail deductibles. The Kansas Insurance Department's shopper's guide explains the basics (Kansas Insurance Department, Home and Renters Shopper's Guide).
- Gutters and roofs. Gutters are often included in a roof claim. Ask whether they were included in the adjuster's estimate.
- Deductible waivers are a red flag. Be wary of anyone offering to cover or waive your deductible.
- Assignment of benefits. Kansas law sets rules if you sign benefits over to a contractor, including a five-business-day cancellation right (K.S.A. 50-6,143 (assignment of insurance benefits to a contractor)).
Example (math illustration only): if hail damage to gutters and downspouts is estimated at $3,000 and your deductible is $1,000, the insurer's payment toward the covered repair would be about $2,000, subject to your policy's terms. If gutters are the only damage and the estimate is below your deductible, a claim would not pay anything.
