About Clearwater
Clearwater was settled in 1870 and platted in 1872. It is named after the Ninnescah River, which runs west and south of town; the name comes from an Osage word for water often translated as clear water. The 2020 census counted 2,653 residents and about 985 housing units.
Part of a famous storm track
The National Weather Service in Wichita notes that the April 26, 1991 tornado began about a mile and a half south of Clearwater before tracking northeast through south Wichita, McConnell Air Force Base and Andover. It remains one of the most significant tornadoes in Kansas history. Most years do not bring a tornado, but nearly every spring brings hail and damaging wind somewhere in the area, and gutters are among the first things to show it.
After a storm, look for:
- Dents along the front edge of aluminum gutters and on downspouts, which often show the size and direction of the hail.
- Gutters pulled away from the fascia or twisted at corners.
- Granules from the shingles piling up in the gutters, a possible sign of roof damage.
- Downspouts knocked loose or crushed at the bottom.
Photograph damage from the ground and note the date. NOAA's Storm Events Database can help confirm when a storm hit the area.
Homes near the river
Lots on lower ground near the Ninnescah and its tributaries can stay saturated after big rains. On those properties, where the downspouts send water is critical. Longer extensions, buried lines to a lower area and good grading help keep water from collecting near the foundation. Building codes call for directing roof water at least 5 feet away from foundations on expansive soils, and river-valley clay often qualifies.
Older homes in town
Clearwater's older streets have mature trees and homes that may still have sectional gutters or a mix of old and newer pieces. Cleaning twice a year is a good baseline under big trees. If a gutter keeps clogging at the same downspout, the outlet may be too small; upgrading to a larger outlet and 3x4 downspout often fixes it.
Acreages and open ground
Homes on acreages around Clearwater sit in open country with little to block wind. Gutters there benefit from closely spaced hangers screwed into solid framing and downspouts strapped securely. Shops and pole barns with metal roofs may need larger gutters to handle fast runoff.
Clearwater weather in a nutshell
The area averages about 34 inches of precipitation a year, with most falling in spring and early summer storms, plus around a foot of snow in a typical winter. The freeze season runs from late October into early April, so a late-fall cleaning helps prevent ice-filled gutters.

Comparing estimates after a storm
After a big storm, several contractors may knock on doors in Clearwater at once. Ask each for a written estimate that lists gutter size and gauge, the number and size of downspouts, the hanger type and spacing, and whether old gutters will be hauled away. If insurance is involved, compare these details with the adjuster's estimate so nothing is missed or double-counted.
Gutters are often bundled into roof work after a storm, so read any roofing contract carefully before signing, check which gutter items it covers, and keep copies of everything, including photos taken before work starts.

Clearwater gutter FAQs
Are gutters usually part of a hail roof claim?
Often. Adjusters commonly include dented gutters and downspouts with roof and exterior damage. Ask whether they were included and keep a copy of the estimate.
How do I know if hail damaged my gutters?
Look for dents along the front edge and on downspouts, and for shingle granules collecting in the gutters. Photograph what you see.
Where did the 1991 tornado start?
The National Weather Service says it began about a mile and a half south of Clearwater before tracking northeast toward Andover.
What can I do about water near my foundation on low ground?
Extend downspouts, consider buried lines to a lower spot and make sure soil slopes away from the house.
Do acreage homes need special gutters?
Not special, but sturdy: closely spaced hangers, secure downspout straps and enough capacity for large roofs.
How often should gutters be cleaned under mature trees?
Twice a year is a good baseline, in late fall and late spring, with an extra check after heavy storms.
Why does one downspout keep clogging?
The outlet or downspout may be too small for the roof area it drains. A larger outlet and downspout often helps.
Do you serve rural Clearwater?
Yes, both in town and on the surrounding acreages.
