About Goddard

Goddard was incorporated in 1910 and had 5,084 residents in the 2020 census, with about 1,757 housing units. It lies about 12 miles southwest of the Arkansas River and 8 miles north-northeast of the Ninnescah River. Lake Afton and its public observatory are just south of town.

Housing in Goddard falls into two groups: older homes in and near the original town, and newer subdivisions that have spread across former farmland as Wichita's west side grew toward it.

Wind and hail on the open plains

Many newer Goddard neighborhoods sit on open land with young trees, so there is little to slow down a spring storm. Strong winds can catch gutters that are loosely hung or pull at end caps, and hail dents aluminum gutters and downspouts. NOAA's Storm Events Database and the National Weather Service in Wichita keep records of local hail and wind reports, which can help when you are documenting the date of a storm for an insurance claim.

On exposed homes, ask about:

  • Hidden hangers spaced closer together than the minimum.
  • Heavier-gauge aluminum, such as 0.032 inch.
  • Downspout straps placed to keep downspouts from rattling or pulling loose in wind.
  • Well-sealed corners and end caps, since wind-driven rain finds weak joints first.

Older homes in town

Older homes closer to Goddard's center tend to have more mature trees, older sectional gutters and fascia boards that may have been patched over the years. Cleaning matters more here, and replacing gutters is a good time to look for soft spots in the fascia.

Clay soils and foundations

Like much of the Wichita area, Goddard has clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry. Downspouts that dump water at the foundation can make that cycle worse. Building codes call for directing roof runoff at least 5 feet away from foundations where expansive soils are present. Extensions, buried lines to daylight, and grading that slopes away from the house all help.

Rain patterns

The Wichita area averages about 34 inches of precipitation a year, much of it in intense spring and early-summer storms. Gutters that handle a gentle rain fine can overflow in a downpour if downspouts are too small or too few. If water spills over the front edge only in heavy rain, that is usually a capacity issue; if it spills in light rain, the gutter is probably clogged or pitched wrong.

Practical notes

Goddard has its own city hall. Most gutter jobs do not raise permit questions, but if fascia, roofing or drainage work is involved, check with the city. HOAs in some newer neighborhoods have color rules.

Gutters on outbuildings and shops

Acreages around Goddard often have detached garages, shops and barns. Gutters on outbuildings keep water from eroding the ground along the walls and can feed rain barrels or stock tanks. Steel buildings may need gutters that fit their roof profile, and large roof areas can call for 6-inch gutters and bigger downspouts. Mention outbuildings when you request an estimate so they can be included in the conversation.

Lake Afton area homes

Rural homes near Lake Afton and on the county roads south of town often have larger roofs, long eaves and more tree cover along fence lines and creeks. Leaves and wind-blown debris collect fast, so a fall cleaning is especially useful there.

If you are new to Goddard and not sure how old your gutters are, the home inspection report from your purchase often notes gutter condition and any drainage concerns.

Goddard gutter FAQs

How often should Goddard gutters be cleaned?

Homes with mature trees usually need twice a year. Newer homes on open lots may need only an annual check, plus a look after windy storms.

Can you put gutters on a shop or barn?

Yes, gutters can be added to most outbuildings. Mention the building size and roof type when you request an estimate.

Why do my gutters overflow only in heavy rain?

That usually means the gutters or downspouts are undersized for the roof. Adding downspouts or upsizing often solves it.

How can I make gutters hold up to Goddard wind?

Closely spaced hidden hangers, heavier gauge aluminum and secure downspout straps help gutters stay put in strong wind.

Where can I find the date of a hail storm?

NOAA's Storm Events Database and the National Weather Service in Wichita publish local storm reports.

Do clay soils affect gutters?

Clay swells when wet, so dumping roof water at the foundation can cause movement. Directing water well away helps.

Do you cover homes outside Goddard city limits?

Yes, including nearby rural homes and acreages around Goddard and Lake Afton.
