From El Paso to Derby
Settlers arrived in 1870, and in 1871 the community was named El Paso and platted. In 1880 the Santa Fe railway renamed its station Derby after a railroad official, and the town incorporated in 1903 under the name El Paso. It stayed largely rural until after World War II, when the aviation industry and nearby McConnell Air Force Base fueled growth. The 2020 census counted 25,625 residents, making Derby the largest suburb of Wichita, and 10,672 housing units, up from 8,774 in 2010.
Three generations of Derby gutters
- Post-war and 1960s homes near the older parts of town often have sectional gutters or early seamless gutters that have been patched repeatedly. Leaking seams, loose spikes and rotted fascia are common.
- 1980s and 1990s neighborhoods usually have seamless aluminum gutters that are now 25 to 40 years old. Many are faded, dented by years of hail and pitched poorly after hangers loosened.
- Newer subdivisions on the east and south sides have larger homes with complex roofs. Builder gutters there are often adequate, but valleys and long runs can overwhelm 5-inch gutters and 2x3 downspouts during heavy storms.
Big roofs, big runoff
A large, steep roof sheds a lot of water quickly. If gutters overflow at inside corners or water pours over the front edge in heavy rain, the system may need more downspouts, larger 3x4 downspouts or a move to 6-inch gutters. Standard residential aluminum gutters are usually 0.027 or 0.032 inch thick; the heavier gauge holds its shape better on long runs and under ladders.
Drainage near the Arkansas River
Derby sits along the Arkansas River southeast of Wichita, and parts of town are flat. Clay soils are common in the area. Codes call for directing roof water at least 5 feet from foundations where expansive soils exist. Many Derby homes have basements, which makes getting water away from the house especially important. Buried lines should slope continuously to an outlet that drains freely.
Hail and storms
Derby gets the same spring hail and wind as the rest of the metro. When a big storm hits, contractors often canvass neighborhoods. Take time to document damage, review your policy and compare written estimates that list gutter size, gauge, downspout size and count, hanger type and removal of old gutters.
HOAs and color choices
Many newer Derby neighborhoods have HOA covenants that govern exterior colors and materials. Check before choosing a new gutter color, especially if you are switching from the builder color.
Cleaning
Older Derby streets have mature shade trees that drop heavy loads of leaves and seeds, and newer neighborhoods are catching up as trees grow. Two-story homes make cleaning riskier, which is when many homeowners ask about guards or hire out cleaning.

What to have ready
When you request an estimate for a Derby home, it helps to know the number of stories, roughly how many feet of gutter the house has, and where the problem spots are. If you have photos of overflow during a storm, those are especially useful because they show exactly where the system cannot keep up.
If the house is in a newer subdivision, the builder's plans or HOA documents may list the original gutter color, which makes matching easier.
Homes backing onto Derby's parks and greenways often have more trees nearby, so they may need cleaning more often than the rest of the street.

Derby gutter FAQs
What should I have ready when requesting an estimate?
The number of stories, a rough idea of how many feet of gutter the house has, photos of problem spots and any HOA color rules.
My Derby gutters overflow in heavy rain. What can I do?
Adding downspouts, upsizing to 3x4 downspouts or switching to 6-inch gutters are common fixes for roofs that shed a lot of water.
Are 1990s gutters due for replacement?
Many are approaching the end of a 20 to 30 year life. Leaks, sagging and failing finish suggest it is time to compare options.
Should downspouts be buried in Derby?
Buried lines can work well if they slope to a free-draining outlet. Make sure there is a way to clean them.
Does my HOA need to approve gutter colors?
Some Derby HOAs regulate exterior colors. Check your covenants before ordering.
What gauge aluminum should I ask about?
Residential aluminum gutters are commonly 0.027 or 0.032 inch. The heavier gauge resists dents and bending better.
Do basements make drainage more important?
Yes. Water near the foundation can find its way into basements, so move roof water well away from the house.
Do you cover all of Derby?
Yes, from the older neighborhoods to the newest subdivisions on the edges of town.
