About El Dorado

El Dorado was laid out and platted in 1868 and incorporated in 1870 on the Walnut River. In 1915 the El Dorado Oil Field became the first oil field found using geologic mapping, part of the Mid-Continent oil province, and the boom shaped the town's growth. On June 10, 1958, an F4 tornado struck El Dorado, killing 13 people and injuring at least 80. The city had 12,870 residents and about 5,838 housing units in the 2020 census.

Gutters on historic and oil-boom homes

El Dorado's older neighborhoods have homes from the late 1800s and the oil-boom years, many with tall roofs, wide eaves and large trees. Typical gutter issues there include:

  • Old gutters with leaky joints and loose spike hangers.
  • Fascia boards that have absorbed decades of overflow.
  • Downspouts that empty against stone or brick foundations.
  • Heavy leaf loads from mature shade trees.

Half-round gutters with round downspouts often suit these older homes, and color-matched aluminum keeps costs down compared with copper.

Post-1958 rebuilding and mid-century homes

Many neighborhoods were built or rebuilt in the decades after the 1958 tornado and through the post-war years. Ranch homes from that period commonly have sectional gutters that leak at seams, or seamless gutters that are now decades old. Replacement is worth considering when leaks are widespread or the gutters no longer hold their pitch.

Homes near El Dorado Lake

Homes near El Dorado Lake, northeast of town, face strong winds off open water. Gutters on these homes benefit from closely spaced hidden hangers, secure downspout straps and guards that are firmly fastened. Lake-area homes also see mosquitoes in summer, and the CDC lists clogged gutters and downspouts among places they breed, so gutters that drain completely are a plus.

Walnut River drainage

Lower areas near the Walnut River can stay wet after heavy storms. Codes call for directing roof water at least 5 feet from foundations where expansive soils exist, and Butler County clay often qualifies. Longer extensions and buried lines to a lower point help protect basements and crawlspaces.

Storms

NOAA's Storm Events Database records frequent hail and wind reports in Butler County each spring. After a storm, check gutters for dents and loose sections, look for granules from the roof and photograph the damage.

Repair or replace?

A few loose hangers, a leaky corner or a downspout knocked loose are simple repairs. When seams leak along whole runs, gutters hold standing water, the finish is failing and the fascia behind is stained or soft, replacement usually makes more sense. On older homes, combining gutter replacement with fascia repair avoids taking new gutters down later.

What to ask in an estimate

  • Gutter size, profile and gauge.
  • Number and size of downspouts, and where each will drain.
  • Hanger type and spacing.
  • Fascia inspection and repair.
  • Removal and disposal of old gutters.

Having these details in writing makes it easier to compare estimates fairly.

Cleaning schedule

Homes on El Dorado's older, tree-lined streets usually need gutter cleaning at least twice a year. Homes near the lake may collect more wind-blown debris, so a check after big storms is worthwhile.

Oil-field-era houses

Some modest homes built quickly for oil-field workers in the boom years have since been added onto several times. That can leave roof edges at different heights, short runs of gutter that end abruptly and downspouts that empty onto lower roofs. Reworking the layout so each roof section drains to a proper downspout often solves long-running water problems on these homes.

El Dorado gutter FAQs

Why do downspouts empty onto my lower roof?

Additions and older layouts often route upper gutters onto lower roofs. A downspout extension or reworked layout carries that water to the ground instead.

How often should El Dorado gutters be cleaned?

Twice a year under mature trees, plus a check after big storms, especially near the lake.

What gutters suit historic El Dorado homes?

Half-round gutters with round downspouts often fit older architecture. Aluminum keeps costs down compared with copper.

What gutters work best near El Dorado Lake?

Gutters with closely spaced hidden hangers, secure downspout straps and firmly fastened guards handle lake winds better.

Why is my basement damp after storms?

Downspouts discharging near the foundation are a common cause. Move water at least 5 feet away and check grading.

What happened in the 1958 El Dorado tornado?

An F4 tornado struck the city on June 10, 1958, killing 13 people and injuring at least 80.

Are clogged gutters a mosquito problem?

They can be. The CDC lists clogged gutters and downspouts among places mosquitoes lay eggs.

Do you cover all of El Dorado?

Yes, in town and around El Dorado Lake.
