About Newton

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended its main line from Emporia to Newton by July 1871, and the city was founded that year, named after Newton, Massachusetts, home of some Santa Fe stockholders. Harvey County was organized in 1872, with Newton as its seat. Bethel College is in neighboring North Newton. Newton had 18,602 residents and about 8,256 housing units in the 2020 census.

Railroad-era homes and tree-lined streets

Newton's older neighborhoods have houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s, many on streets shaded by mature trees. Those homes often have:

  • Steep roofs and tall eaves that make gutter work a two-story ladder job.
  • Older gutters, sometimes half-round, with joints that leak.
  • Painted wood fascia that may contain lead on pre-1978 homes. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires lead-safe practices for paid work that disturbs those surfaces.
  • Heavy fall leaf drop and spring seed loads that clog gutters and downspouts.

Mid-century and newer neighborhoods

Post-war ranches spread across Newton as the city grew. Many have long, low eaves with sectional gutters that leak at the seams and downspouts that discharge next to the foundation. Newer neighborhoods have seamless aluminum gutters that mainly need cleaning, pitch checks and occasional repairs.

Drainage on flat ground

Newton sits on relatively flat ground, and clay soils are common in Harvey County. Building codes call for directing roof water at least 5 feet from foundations where expansive soils exist. On flat lots, longer extensions or buried lines to a lower spot are often needed to keep water from pooling against the house.

Harvey County storms

Spring brings hail, strong winds and heavy rain to Harvey County, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists frequent reports. After a storm, look for dented gutters and downspouts, sections pulled loose and granules from the roof collecting in the trough. Photograph damage and note the date before repairs.

Cleaning schedule

Under mature trees, plan on cleaning at least twice a year: late fall after leaves drop and late spring after seed season. Homes with heavy tree cover may benefit from guards, which reduce how often gutters fill, though they still need occasional attention.

Repair, replace or upgrade

Gutters on Newton homes do not always need full replacement. Resealing joints, replacing loose hangers and correcting pitch can keep sound gutters working. Replacement makes sense when leaks are widespread, the metal is thin or corroded, or the gutters are undersized for the roof. Common upgrades include seamless gutters, hidden hangers, 3x4 downspouts and guards on homes under heavy tree cover.

What to have ready

When you request an estimate, note the number of stories, roughly how much gutter the house has, where overflow or leaks happen and where downspouts currently drain. Photos from the ground help. If you have outbuildings, mention them too.

Ice and winter

Like the rest of central Kansas, Newton gets snow and occasional ice storms. Gutters still full of leaves in winter can freeze into heavy blocks that bend sections and pull hangers loose. A late-fall cleaning and good attic insulation and ventilation help reduce ice-related gutter damage.

Wind across the open plains

Homes on Newton's edges, where the city meets farm fields, take strong prairie winds head-on. Gutters there benefit from closely spaced hidden hangers and secure downspout straps. Field dust and crop residue can also collect in gutters, settling as sludge that is easy to miss from the ground. Flushing gutters with a hose after cleaning helps keep outlets and downspouts open.

Newton gutter FAQs

Do homes on the edge of Newton need sturdier gutters?

Homes facing open fields take stronger wind, so closely spaced hangers and secure downspout straps are worth asking about.

Can ice damage gutters in Newton?

Yes. Leaves and water left in gutters can freeze into heavy blocks that bend sections and loosen hangers.

Do older Newton homes need special care when fascia is repaired?

On pre-1978 homes, painted fascia may contain lead, and paid work that disturbs it should follow EPA lead-safe practices.

How often should gutters be cleaned on tree-lined streets?

At least twice a year, in late fall and late spring, with a check after big storms.

Why does water pool near my foundation?

Flat lots and short extensions are common causes. Moving water at least 5 feet away usually helps.

Are half-round gutters available for historic homes?

Yes, in aluminum, steel and copper, and they often suit older architecture.

Should I replace leaky sectional gutters on my ranch?

If seams leak in many places, seamless replacement is often more practical than repeated resealing.

Do you cover all of Newton?

Yes, Newton, North Newton and nearby parts of Harvey County.
