A small town in farm country

Andale was founded in the early 1880s in northwest Sedgwick County. Its first post office opened in January 1899, and it had passenger rail service on the Missouri Pacific line between Wichita and Geneseo until at least 1964. In the 2020 census Andale had 941 residents and about 325 housing units.

With a town that size, the housing stock is a mix of older homes in town, some newer houses on the edges, and farmhouses and acreages spread across the surrounding countryside. Each brings its own gutter needs.

Farmhouses and older homes

Older Andale houses and farmhouses often have deep eaves, porches with their own small roofs, and additions built at different times. Gutters on these homes may be a patchwork of sectional pieces installed over decades. Common issues include:

  • Porch roofs without gutters, so water splashes onto steps and soaks the porch floor.
  • Gutters on additions that do not tie into the main system, leaving gaps where water pours off.
  • Downspouts that empty into flower beds or against old stone or block foundations.
  • Wood fascia that has softened behind decades of overflow.

Replacing a mixed system with continuous seamless gutters can simplify maintenance and make it easier to plan where each downspout drains.

Shops, garages and barns

Many properties around Andale have detached shops and pole barns, often with metal roofs. Rain sheets off metal fast, so gutters on these buildings need enough capacity. Large roofs may call for 6-inch or larger gutters and 3x4 downspouts. Steel gutters can suit metal buildings, although published guides note that steel can rust once its coating is scratched. Gutters on outbuildings also make it practical to collect rainwater in barrels or tanks for gardens or livestock, with an overflow pointed away from the building.

Open-country weather

Out on the open plains, homes have little protection from straight-line winds and hail. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists frequent hail and wind reports across Sedgwick County each spring. Wind can work loose gutters that are only spiked into the fascia, and hail dents aluminum quickly. Heavier gauge material and closely spaced hidden hangers hold up better.

Drainage on rural lots

Rural lots usually have more room to work with than city lots, which makes drainage easier. Downspouts can discharge onto lawns or pasture well away from the house, and the EPA encourages sending roof water to areas where it can soak into the ground. Watch for discharge points that erode bare soil or wash out gravel drives; a splash pad or a few feet of rock at the outlet helps.

Trees and windbreaks

Farm properties often have windbreak rows of cedars, elms or cottonwoods. Cottonwood fluff, elm seeds and cedar needles can clog gutters quickly, sometimes more than ordinary leaves. If your house sits near a windbreak, plan on cleaning at least twice a year and consider guards designed for fine debris.

Tell us about your house and any outbuildings and we'll call you back. Published national ranges are in the gutter cost guide.

Getting ready for an estimate

For rural properties, it helps to list every building you want gutters on, roughly how long each roof edge is, and whether the roofs are shingle or metal. Note any spots where water already causes problems, such as a washed-out area by the shop door or a damp corner of the basement. Photos taken from the ground are useful too.

Andale gutter FAQs

How often should farmhouse gutters be cleaned?

Twice a year is a good baseline, in late fall and late spring. Homes next to windbreaks or cottonwoods may need a third cleaning after seed season.

Should my porch roof have gutters?

Usually yes. A small gutter keeps water off steps and walkways and protects the porch floor and foundation.

What gutters work best on a metal shop roof?

Large roofs often need 6-inch or bigger gutters and 3x4 downspouts. Steel or heavy aluminum are common choices.

Can I collect rainwater from my barn gutters?

Many people do. Use a screened barrel or tank and route the overflow away from the building.

Do windbreak trees clog gutters?

Yes. Cottonwood fluff, elm seeds and cedar needles are fine debris that can block downspouts and pass through simple screens.

Do you cover rural properties around Andale?

Yes, both in town and on the surrounding farms and acreages.

How do I keep a downspout from eroding my yard?

Add a splash pad or a short bed of rock at the outlet, or extend the downspout to a spot where water can spread out.

Is hail damage to gutters covered by insurance?

Often, as part of a roof or exterior claim. Check your policy, document the damage and note the storm date.
