About Hutchinson
Hutchinson was founded in 1871 when C. C. Hutchinson contracted with the Santa Fe Railway to build a town at the railroad's crossing of the Arkansas River. The town actually grew up about half a mile north, on the banks of Cow Creek. It incorporated in August 1872 and has been home to salt mines since 1887, earning the nickname "Salt City." It now hosts the Kansas State Fair and is home to the Cosmosphere and Strataca. The 2020 census counted 40,006 residents and about 18,609 housing units.
Older homes near Cow Creek and downtown
Hutchinson's older neighborhoods have homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s on streets lined with mature trees. Gutters there commonly deal with:
- Heavy leaf and seed loads in fall and spring.
- Old gutters with leaky joints, rusted steel or loose spikes.
- Fascia boards softened by years of overflow.
- Downspouts tied into old underground lines that may be cracked or clogged.
Lots near Cow Creek can stay wet after heavy storms, so where downspouts discharge matters as much as the gutters themselves.
Mid-century growth
Much of Hutchinson's housing went up in the post-war decades. Ranch homes from that era often have sectional gutters that have been patched for years. Once leaks are widespread and hangers keep loosening, seamless replacement is usually more practical than more sealant.
Arkansas River valley drainage
Hutchinson sits in the Arkansas River valley, and much of the city is flat. On flat ground, water from downspouts can pool along foundations. Building codes call for directing roof water at least 5 feet from foundations where expansive soils exist. The EPA suggests sending downspout water to lawns or rain gardens where it can soak in. Longer extensions, buried lines and regrading help.
Reno County storms
Spring storms bring hail and damaging wind across Reno County, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists frequent reports. Aluminum gutters dent easily, and gutters loosely attached can pull away in strong wind. After a storm, check for dents, loose sections and roof granules in the gutters, and photograph damage.
Newer neighborhoods
Newer subdivisions mostly have seamless aluminum gutters. Undersized downspouts on large roofs and short extensions are the most common complaints.

Repair or replace?
Sound gutters with a few problems can often be repaired: resealing joints, replacing hangers, correcting pitch and reattaching downspouts. Replacement makes sense when leaks are widespread, steel gutters are rusting through, or the fascia behind needs work. Seamless aluminum with hidden hangers is the most common replacement choice, while half-round gutters can suit older homes.
Questions to ask in an estimate
- What size gutters and downspouts are planned, and how many downspouts?
- What gauge is the material?
- What hangers will be used, and how far apart?
- Where will each downspout drain?
- Is fascia inspection and removal of old gutters included?
Cleaning and winter
On tree-lined streets, plan on cleaning gutters at least twice a year. A late-fall cleaning matters most, because gutters full of wet leaves can freeze into heavy blocks in winter and pull away from the house.
State Fair season and fall leaves
The Kansas State Fair arrives in September, and soon after, Hutchinson's mature trees start dropping leaves. Many homeowners plan their fall gutter cleaning for after the last leaves are down, usually in late November or early December, so they only have to do it once before winter. If oaks on your street hold their leaves into winter, a second pass may be needed.

Hutchinson gutter FAQs
When is the best time for a fall gutter cleaning in Hutchinson?
After most leaves have dropped, often late November or early December. Streets with oaks may need a second pass.
Should I repair or replace older Hutchinson gutters?
Repair works for sound gutters with a few problems. Rust-through, widespread leaks or failing fascia usually point toward replacement.
Why do my older Hutchinson gutters rust?
Older steel gutters rust once the coating wears or is scratched. Aluminum or newer coated steel resists corrosion better.
How can I keep water away from my house on flat ground?
Extend downspouts at least 5 feet, slope soil away and consider buried lines to a lower spot.
Are seamless gutters worth it on a mid-century ranch?
If sectional seams leak in many places, seamless gutters reduce joints and maintenance.
What should I check after a hailstorm?
Look for dents, loose sections and shingle granules in the gutters, and photograph any damage.
How often should gutters be cleaned under mature trees?
At least twice a year, plus after heavy storms.
Do you cover all of Hutchinson?
