Why Do My Gutters Overflow? 8 Causes and Fixes
Short answer: most overflow comes from a clog, a sag or a backward pitch. If clean, straight gutters still overflow, the cause is usually too few or too-small downspouts, a roof valley dumping water into one corner, or gutters that are undersized for the roof.
Start by watching it rain
The best diagnostic tool is a rainstorm and a few minutes outside with an umbrella. Note exactly where water comes over: along a whole run, at one corner, near a downspout, or behind the gutter. Each pattern points to a different cause. Photos or a short video make it easy to show someone later.
1. Clogged gutters or outlets
Pattern: overflow along a run or near the downspout, often worse after leaf or seed season. Fix: clean the gutters, clear the outlet and flush the downspout. If clogs come back quickly, see how often to clean gutters and gutter guards.
2. Clogged downspout or underground line
Pattern: the gutter fills and spills near the outlet while the downspout trickles. Water may burst out of an elbow or a buried line may back up. Fix: flush from the top, open elbows, and check underground lines for clogs or crushing. See downspouts and drainage.
3. Sagging sections
Pattern: water spills at a low spot between hangers, and the gutter holds standing water after rain. Fix: rehang on hidden hangers at closer spacing and repair any soft fascia. See gutter repair.
4. Wrong pitch
Pattern: water pools at the end away from the downspout or spills over an end cap. Fix: repitch the run so it falls steadily toward the outlet, or add a downspout at the low end.
5. Too few or too-small downspouts
Pattern: clean, straight gutters overflow in heavy rain, especially on long runs. Fix: add a downspout or upsize from 2x3-inch to 3x4-inch. A gutter can only drain as fast as its outlets, and this is often the cheapest fix for overflow.
6. Roof valleys
Pattern: one corner shoots water over the gutter every storm, right where two roof planes meet. Fix: a valley splash guard (a small metal diverter at the corner), a downspout close to the valley, or a larger gutter on that run.
7. Undersized gutters for the roof
Pattern: overflow on large or steep roof planes even with enough downspouts. Fix: 6-inch gutters with 3x4-inch downspouts on the affected runs. HomeGuide notes that gutter size should be calculated from roof area, pitch and local rainfall intensity (HomeGuide, gutter installation cost). For design, local rainfall intensity estimates are published by NOAA (NOAA Precipitation Frequency Data Server (Atlas 14)). See 5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters.
8. Water running behind the gutter
Pattern: water drips between the gutter and the fascia, staining the wall, while the front edge stays dry. Fix: check the drip edge (it should reach into the gutter), add a gutter apron if needed, refasten the gutter tight to the fascia, and repair rotted wood. See fascia and soffit.
Wichita weather makes overflow more visible
Wichita averages a little over 34 inches of precipitation a year, mostly in the warmer months (Wikipedia: Wichita, Kansas (climate)), and much of it comes in short, intense thunderstorms. A system that copes with a steady shower can be overwhelmed in the first minutes of a summer downpour. That is why overflow often shows up only in the biggest storms, and why sizing and downspout capacity matter here.
Why overflow is worth fixing
- It drops concentrated water at the foundation. Where expansive soils are known to exist, the building code calls for roof water to discharge at least 5 feet from foundation walls (ICC, 2018 International Residential Code, Section R801.3 roof drainage).
- It erodes beds, splashes mud on siding and can flood window wells.
- Water behind the gutter rots fascia and soffit.
- In winter, overflow freezes into icicles and ice on walks.
Diagnosis checklist
- Is the gutter clean and the outlet clear?
- Does the downspout drain freely when flushed?
- Is the run straight, with no sags or standing water?
- Does it slope toward the outlet?
- Is there a valley above the overflow spot?
- How long is the run, and how many downspouts serve it?
- Is water coming over the front or behind the back?
If you work through the list and still cannot find the cause, the problem is likely capacity: gutter size, downspout size or both. The cost guide has published ranges for upsizing and for adding downspouts.
Quick fixes you can try first
Before planning bigger changes, clean the gutter and flush the downspout, reattach any loose elbow, and add an extension so water leaves the downspout well away from the house. If the overflow is at one valley corner, a simple splash guard is an inexpensive test. If those steps do not solve it, capacity is the likely issue.
Keep notes or photos of each storm's overflow spots for a season; patterns over several rains are more reliable than a single observation.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my gutters overflow even though they are clean?
Usually too few or too-small downspouts, a roof valley concentrating water at one corner, a sag or backward pitch, or gutters undersized for a large or steep roof.
Will a bigger downspout stop overflow?
Often. Upsizing from 2x3-inch to 3x4-inch or adding a second downspout on a long run increases how fast the gutter drains.
What is a valley splash guard?
A small metal diverter installed at a gutter corner below a roof valley that keeps fast-moving water from shooting over the gutter.
Why is water dripping behind my gutter?
The drip edge may not reach into the gutter, the gutter may have pulled away from the fascia, or the gutter may be overflowing at the back. A gutter apron and refastening often help.
Can gutter guards cause overflow?
Some can let water overshoot in very heavy rain, especially reverse-curve hoods and fine mesh below steep roofs or valleys, or when guards are matted with debris.
Do I need bigger gutters?
If clean, straight gutters with enough downspouts still overflow on a large or steep roof plane, 6-inch gutters on those runs are worth considering.
